When Bree finally fell asleep, it didn’t take long for the nightmares. The man on top of her, the knife at her throat, attempted rape. She woke up screaming.

Sergio was there to hold her in an instant.

“It’s okay. I’m here,” he whispered.

Bree closed her eyes, feeling his strong arms around her. She buried her face in his neck and Sergio tensed.

She pulled away from him, searching his eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Why are you asking me that? I’m not the one who was almost raped.”

Bree placed her hand on his chest and his breathing quickened. She traced his face with her fingertip. Sergio grabbed her hand.

“Stop it.”

“You are so beautiful, Sergio.” Bree wasn’t trying to upset him; she wanted him to realize that he was safe with her, that she valued and respected him.

“No, I’m not.” Sergio got up and backed away from the bed. She followed and the full moon behind her made her gown transparent.

“Sergio.”

“I’m tired and so are you. You should get some sleep.” He turned and left the room as fast he could. She had called him beautiful but he knew what he really was — damaged. Touched and violated by disgusting men whom he couldn’t fight. He crawled back into bed and closed his eyes, unconsciously listening for any sound.

He smelled her shampoo before he even heard her.

Bree crawled onto his bed and Sergio sat up, wary. She moved closer and took his hand, careful not to be aggressive at all. Sergio closed his eyes when she moved her hand along his face. He liked her touch. When he opened his eyes, she was looking at his lips. She raised her eyes to his.

His heart was about to explode in his chest. No one had ever touched him like this. She explored his face before her hands moved to his chest. She touched the muscles there, then moved to his biceps. Sergio closed his eyes again. He had never allowed anyone this kind of freedom. The feelings spreading through him weren’t the ones he always felt if someone touched him beyond a casual brush.

This was different. His body was responding to her sexually. Her hands were soft and small as she threaded their fingers together.

“You shouldn’t be in here.”

“You’ve never kissed a woman, have you? It’s too personal. Too intimate.”

“I have been with women.”

“That doesn’t answer my question. I want to kiss you, Sergio, because you’re beautiful, sweet, kind, and caring.”

She was inches from his mouth and blood pounded in his ears. “I’m a killer.”

“I don’t care. You kill those who deserve to die.” Bree pressed her lips softly to his. Sergio made a small sound and she applied more pressure. She wrapped her arms around his neck and his arms circled her waist. She broke the kiss slowly.

“You should go,” Sergio whispered. “You have no idea —”

“I think I do. You have classic signs of someone who was molested and abused. I’m so sorry that happened to you.”

Sergio’s face shoed his shock. “How —?”

“I pay
